The French Quarter contains limitless things to do and see (not to mention eat and drink), notably the art galleries of Royal Street and architecture of Jackson Square by day, and the music and spectacle of Bourbon Street after dark. You can find bargain treasures at the French and Flea Markets, or hit the more upscale shops at Canal Place or the Riverwalk. Or just relax for a couple of hours on the Steamboat Natchez, which docks right in the Quarter.

One of our favorite Big Easy spots, however, is The Garden District and Uptown, a neighborhood filled with grand Victorian mansions and gardens built by wealthy city merchants and planters (and often featured in Anne Rice novels). The historic St. Charles Streetcar, which you can pick up at the corner of St. Charles and Canal Streets, passes many of its most famous landmarks and ends up near the Audubon Zoo in Audubon Park.

The great live oaks in this park are rivaled only those in City Park, which can be reached by the new Canal Street Streetcar line and houses the city's Botanical Gardens and Museum of Art.

For adventures outside the city, we recommend a swamp tour or a day-trip to visit some grand Louisiana plantations, both of which are accessible by tour bus from the French Quarter.
